Charlotte leaders are mobilizing to help roughly 138,000 residents affected by the suspension of federal SNAP benefits. Mecklenburg County has dedicated $740,000 to boost food pantries, distribute extra food boxes, and provide financial assistance through gift cards and vouchers.
Local organizations have launched new programs to bridge the gap left by the SNAP pause.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Food Policy Council and county public health agencies are offering eligible SNAP recipients $50 in tokens for shopping at participating farmers markets throughout November.
Hearts United for Good (HUG Charlotte) is increasing its weekly food distributions every Wednesday evening, meeting the community’s rising needs.
Residents seeking help can also visit Mecklenburg County’s Community Resource Centers, such as Ella B. Scarborough, Valerie C. Woodard, and Catherine M. Wilson centers.
Despite ongoing federal disruptions, local commitment to keeping Charlotte families fed remains strong and focused.
