A Bridge to Bring Charlotte Together

South End and Uptown are finally getting connected—on foot

Anyone who's tried to walk from South End to Uptown knows the struggle. I-277 has long stood as an imposing barrier between two of Charlotte's most vibrant neighborhoods, forcing pedestrians to navigate busy intersections and highway on-ramps.

That's about to change.

Construction has officially begun on the Rail Trail Bridge, a $16.4 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge that will finally span I-277. The project was first discussed in 2019, approved earlier this year, and is now becoming reality.

What You'll Get

The 280-foot bridge will feature a 16-foot-wide concrete path connecting the CATS Blue Line Brooklyn Village Station to the Rail Trail. It will create a seamless link between South College Street and South Boulevard—no more awkward detours or risky street crossings.

On any given nice day, hundreds of people bike, walk, run, or scooter along the Rail Trail. This bridge will make those journeys safer and easier while finally erasing the dividing line between two connected communities.

The Timeline

Construction starts in the coming weeks, with completion expected by mid-2028. In the meantime, the left lanes on the John Belk Freeway near College Street are closed through February 2026.

Why It Matters

This isn't just a convenient shortcut—it's Charlotte's commitment to becoming a truly walkable city. As South End and Uptown continue to evolve, the connections between them become increasingly important. This bridge is an investment in the kind of infrastructure that makes cities livable, sustainable, and connected.

The wait until 2028 might seem long, but soon enough, walking from South End to Uptown will feel like exactly what it should be: a pleasant journey through your city.
