The North Carolina General Assembly has overridden Governor Josh Stein’s veto of House Bill 318, passing a divisive immigration law that compels sheriffs to work more closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The override passed 72-48 in the House, with Democrat Rep. Carla Cunningham of Mecklenburg County breaking ranks, drawing both strong criticism and accusations of racism for her vote.

The Senate, led by a Republican supermajority, swiftly followed with a 30-19 vote.

The law now requires law enforcement to confirm the immigration status of detainees and mandates a 48-hour hold for those suspected to be in the country illegally, allowing ICE to intervene.

Governor Stein has denounced the hold as unconstitutional, warning of potential legal challenges.

The measure expands mandatory ICE detainers to include non-violent offenses, intensifying an already heated statewide debate over the future of immigration enforcement.
