Wegmans Breaks Ground on First Charlotte Store in Ballantyne

Wegmans Food Markets has officially commenced construction on its inaugural Charlotte location, marking a significant milestone for the beloved grocery chain.

The new store, spanning approximately 110,000 square feet, is situated at 11550 North Community House Road in the vibrant Ballantyne neighborhood.

Strategically positioned less than half a mile from the bustling Bowl at Ballantyne, the store is set to open its doors in the fall of 2026.

“This groundbreaking is a pivotal step forward as we prepare for opening day,” stated Dan Aken, Wegmans' Vice President of Real Estate and Store Planning.

“We can’t wait to welcome the Charlotte community into their new Wegmans.”

The Ballantyne store will feature expansive departments for produce, seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese, along with a market café offering indoor and outdoor seating.

In celebration of its new role in the community, Wegmans presented a $5,000 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, marking the beginning of an ongoing partnership to fight food insecurity in the region.

The store is expected to create approximately 450 permanent jobs, in addition to more than 250 construction jobs during development.

Wegmans, consistently ranked as one of the top U.S. workplaces, is partnering with Frampton Construction Company to build the store.

“We’ve received hundreds of requests from locals asking for a store in their area, and we’ve spent years looking for exactly the right location,” Aken added.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Wegmans experience to this community.”

As part of the larger Ballantyne Reimagined project, the store will be adjacent to The Bowl at Ballantyne, a mixed-use development featuring tenants such as Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, North Italia, and Harriet’s Hamburgers.

These additions aim to transform Ballantyne into a vibrant, walkable community.

Wegmans' expansion into Charlotte reflects its commitment to meeting customer demand and enhancing the local grocery landscape.
