Waymo’s driverless vehicles have sparked attention in Charlotte after residents spotted several cars in Uptown near the Carolina Panthers practice field.

Online speculation has grown about whether Waymo is mapping local roads for autonomous operations.

Waymo, which operates in ten cities nationwide, has not confirmed its plans, and North Carolina transportation officials declined to comment.

State law already permits autonomous vehicles across North Carolina, giving companies like Waymo a legal pathway to operate in Charlotte without needing city approval.

Local reaction is mixed.

Some drivers express fears about machine-driven cars navigating areas with high traffic and aggressive habits, especially near challenging spots like Exit 3A.

Others are curious and open to trying the technology, noting Charlotte’s less congested roads compared to larger cities.

This isn’t Charlotte’s first experience with autonomous testing, as Cruise briefly piloted robotaxis here in 2023.

For now, Charlotte waits to see what happens as Waymo’s presence grows.
