The Charlotte City Council has approved a fare inspector program for the city's light rail and buses. The program will help enforce fare payment and increase revenue for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). Fare inspectors will be authorized to ask for proof of payment from passengers and issue citations for those without valid fares. The program aims to improve safety, security, and fare compliance on public transportation. Read More... |
A major shift may be on the horizon for I-77 Express Lanes commuters.
North Carolina lawmakers have passed a bill requiring Cintra, the operator of the I-77 Express Lanes, to repay $270 million in excess toll revenue.
This move follows years of controversy and frustration among drivers traveling between Charlotte, Lake Norman, and nearby communities.
The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature.
If enacted, the funds could be directed toward local road improvements, transit options, or upgrades along the I-77 corridor—addressing both daily congestion and long-standing complaints over the toll agreement.
While the express lanes will remain, the repayment signals a rare act of accountability in local transportation policy.
Businesses and commuters across north Mecklenburg and Charlotte are closely watching to see how this unprecedented financial return could impact the region’s future.
This may mark a turning point in Charlotte’s ongoing debate over toll roads and public-private partnerships. Read More... |
Charlotte is launching a one-year Red Light Camera Pilot Program at 10 high-crash intersections, part of the city's Vision Zero initiative to prevent traffic deaths.
Selected locations include busy routes like Norris Avenue & N Graham Street, University City Blvd & I-85 Northbound Ramp, and intersections near schools, shopping centers, and neighborhoods.
The city chose these spots by analyzing crash volumes, severity, and heavy pedestrian or bicycle traffic.
The program kicks off with a warning period before civil penalties take effect—citations will be mailed but won't impact driver's license or insurance points.
Charlotte aims to reduce severe crashes by up to 50% at these sites, using funds from civil penalties to support local schools.
Slow down, stop on red, and help make Charlotte’s roads safer for everyone. Read More... |
Music shapes the atmosphere in Charlotte’s restaurants, bars, shops, and salons — but many owners don’t realize that personal streaming accounts like Spotify or Apple Music don’t grant legal rights for public play.
This issue is back in focus locally after BoatYard Lake Norman was named in a copyright lawsuit by ASCAP and major publishers, accused of playing music for customers without proper licenses.
Any business in Charlotte where customers, clients, or guests can hear music — from breweries in NoDa to gyms in Ballantyne — needs to review their licensing.
Performing Rights Organizations like ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR collect fees and distribute royalties for public performances.
Securing a proper public performance license or using a commercial music service helps local businesses avoid costly legal action and keeps the Queen City’s soundtrack going strong. Read More... |
