Farmers markets in Gastonia, Mount Holly, and now Belmont are accepting SNAP benefits for the 2026 season. This major change helps families save while supporting local food producers.

Belmont Farmers Market at Stowe Park joins SNAP for the first time, expanding fresh food access across the growing western Charlotte area.

Shoppers using SNAP can visit the market booth, choose their spending amount, and swipe their EBT card to receive tokens or vouchers valid with market vendors.

These tokens cover essentials such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat, bread, and local foods, making healthy choices more accessible.

Gaston County Public Health officials say this program breaks down barriers to nutritious food, supports families, and strengthens the local economy.

As new neighborhoods grow, access to healthy, affordable produce is more important than ever for local communities.

Electric air taxis may soon take to the skies over North Carolina, signaling a bold step toward futuristic travel.

Selected as one of 26 states for a major mobility pilot, North Carolina will help test electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft—or eVTOLs—capable of rapid, regional flights.

Initial test flights could start this summer, with routes linking Concord Regional Airport and Piedmont Triad International Airport.

Major innovators like Joby Aviation and BETA Technologies are slated to play a role in these trials, focusing on transporting people, urgent medical supplies, and cargo.

Flights are expected to cut typical travel times down to just 10–20 minutes, potentially revolutionizing emergency response and daily commutes in the future.

While Charlotte won’t host full-service routes immediately, being included in the pilot puts the city at the forefront of this transportation evolution.

All eyes are on North Carolina as it helps define the next era of how we move.

North Carolina is currently facing a significant staffing shortage, with about 220 to 270 state trooper positions unfilled statewide.

This gap is most severe across remote mountain counties, rural areas, and fast-growing regions, putting pressure on public safety as more residents and vehicles hit the roads.

Underlying causes include low pay (starting near $55,000, much less than other states), weaker benefits, tough working conditions, and increasing departures to higher-paying police departments.

Some counties now operate with one-sixth of their patrols unstaffed, stretching emergency response times and leaving less capacity for traffic enforcement and routine patrols.

While initiatives like paid cadet programs and boosted academy recruitment are underway, the state struggles to compete until compensation and work expectations improve.

Without major changes, local law enforcement will keep feeling the pinch, and North Carolina’s coverage gap is likely to grow.
