Charlotte and Mecklenburg County boast over 3,000 miles of creeks that are vital for stormwater management, wildlife habitats, and supplying drinking water to local communities.
Creek Week 2026, set for March 21–28, offers residents a unique opportunity to support and celebrate these essential waterways through hands-on activities.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services has planned more than two dozen events across the area, including creek cleanups, guided hikes, storm drain marking, and engaging educational experiences for families.
Events like the Stormwater Runoff 5K at Latta Nature Preserve and learn-to-fish sessions encourage everyone to get involved.
The week culminates with The Big Spring Clean on Saturday, March 28, where volunteers will help beautify seven sites throughout the region from 9 a.m. to noon.
Residents are encouraged to participate and help safeguard the waterways that sustain Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s environment. Read More... |
Charlotte faces mounting pressure as housing costs soar faster than incomes, leaving many families struggling to find affordable options.
During Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region’s recent symposium, leaders and advocates shed light on these challenges while celebrating new hope in neighborhoods like Hope Springs in North Charlotte.
Lisa Skinner’s story stands out: once raised in a Habitat home, she’s now preparing to move into a place of her own with her children, offering them lasting stability and the opportunity to build memories in a space they can truly call home.
Nearly 29% of North Carolina households are considered cost-burdened, dedicating more than 30% of their income to housing.
Habitat Charlotte Region addresses this crisis with income-based mortgages, aiming for homeownership without financial strain.
Their collaborative efforts, showcased at the Building Futures Affordable Housing Symposium, signal hope and long-term solutions for families across the city. Read More... |
Charlotte’s Back to Play Brings Hope to Children After Disasters
In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation across western North Carolina, Charlotte resident Faith Stearns launched Back to Play, a nonprofit delivering comfort to kids who’ve lost everything.
Inspired by her work as an occupational therapist and her concern for children’s emotional well-being, Faith created backpacks filled with thoughtfully chosen items — from stuffed animals to blankets and art supplies.
Each backpack is organized by age and gender, ensuring displaced children quickly receive something personal and comforting when disaster strikes.
Within days of sharing her mission, the Charlotte community rallied, helping Back to Play gain nonprofit status rapidly and expanding its reach beyond North Carolina — including relief efforts in Jamaica and wildfire zones near Los Angeles.
Faith’s vision is to have backpacks ready for any future emergency, reminding children—and the community—that small acts of kindness restore hope. Read More... |
