South Charlotte’s Sharon Road Finally Getting Safety Fix After Years of Crashes
$3.5M project aims to reduce accidents near SouthPark, but neighbors say more changes are still needed
A dangerous stretch gets attention A dangerous stretch of Sharon Road in South Charlotte is finally getting attention after years of crashes, close calls, and growing concerns from residents.
What’s changing near SouthPark City leaders approved a $3.5 million project aimed at improving safety near Sharon Road and Eastbourne Road, close to SouthPark. The plan is to straighten and flatten the four-lane road, add a left turn lane at Eastbourne Road, and expand sidewalks to better protect pedestrians.
Neighbors have seen years of crashes Neighbors say the curve has been a longtime hazard, with cars veering into yards, hitting stop signs and poles, and a fatal crash on record. Speeding and congestion on the bend make turning onto Sharon Road difficult, especially where there is a daycare and a retirement community nearby.
Concerns about speeding remain Some community leaders support the upgrade but worry that smoothing out the curve could encourage faster driving. They are also pushing for additional safety measures like traffic signals, pedestrian beacons, and clearly marked crosswalks.
Timeline The city says the project should be completed by the end of 2027.
