Many Charlotte-area residents have opened their latest power bill with a bit of sticker shock this winter. Higher utility rates combined with colder temperatures have pushed gas and electric costs up across North Carolina.
Now, a new state initiative called Energy Saver North Carolina is aiming to help residents reduce those costs through energy-efficiency upgrades and rebates.
The program provides financial assistance to income-qualified homeowners and renters who want to make improvements that reduce energy usage and lower monthly utility bills.
Two rebate programs available
Energy Saver NC currently offers two main rebate pathways: the Homes Program and the HEATER Program.
The Homes Program focuses on improving the overall energy efficiency of a home. This can include upgrades such as improved insulation, sealing air leaks, or replacing older heating and cooling systems.
One of the biggest benefits of this pathway is that participants can receive a free home energy audit. This evaluation helps identify where a home is losing energy and which improvements will provide the greatest savings.
The HEATER Program, on the other hand, helps residents purchase energy-efficient appliances and electrified home equipment. Eligible upgrades may include:
• ENERGY STAR stovetops
• ENERGY STAR dryers
• Heat pump water heaters
• Electric heat pumps for heating and cooling
These upgrades are designed to reduce energy consumption while also improving comfort inside the home.
Lower bills and improved comfort
With energy costs rising nationwide, programs like Energy Saver NC are designed to help households lower their monthly expenses while also improving home efficiency.
In addition to reducing utility bills, many of the upgrades supported by the program can also improve indoor air quality and overall home comfort.
Because the program is income-eligible, it prioritizes residents who may benefit the most from financial assistance when making energy-saving improvements.
How to apply
Residents interested in the program can learn more and apply online by visiting:

The website includes an application to determine eligibility and provides guidance on which rebate pathway may be the best fit.
Program officials recommend starting with the Homes Program because the free energy audit can help homeowners and renters identify the upgrades that will deliver the greatest savings.
