Dedicated Volunteers Enhance Passenger Experience at CLT Airport

Meet the individuals making travel smoother at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) stands as one of North America's busiest hubs, serving millions of travelers annually.

Amidst the bustling terminals, a team of dedicated volunteers plays a pivotal role in ensuring passengers navigate the airport with ease.

These volunteers, easily identifiable by their red "ask me" buttons, offer assistance ranging from providing directions to recommending dining options.

Since the program's inception in 2005, volunteers have assisted countless travelers, embodying the spirit of Southern hospitality.

One such volunteer, Jim Cogdell, transitioned from a nursing career to become a fixture at CLT.

After retiring, he sought a meaningful way to stay engaged and found his calling in helping passengers.

"You get a chance to make somebody smile every now and then, which is really cool," Cogdell shared.

His commitment has led him to assist over 30,000 passengers in just three years.

Beyond providing directions, volunteers like Cogdell offer emotional support during stressful travel moments.

He recalls comforting a distraught woman en route to see her injured brother, offering solace and ensuring she reached her gate.

"I can sit and help you cry," he told her, highlighting the compassionate nature of the volunteer program.

Diana May, the airport's volunteer programs manager, praised Cogdell's dedication.

"Jim has a big heart, and he wears it on his sleeve. We couldn't do it without him," she noted.

Volunteers commit to at least three four-hour shifts monthly, with the program operating daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Prospective volunteers must be at least 18 years old and undergo a background check.

For those interested in joining this impactful program, more information is available by contacting the airport's volunteer office.

Through their unwavering commitment, CLT's volunteers significantly enhance the travel experience, ensuring passengers feel welcomed and supported throughout their journey.
