New Program Aims to Equip Residents and Businesses for Upcoming Infrastructure Projects |
Charlotte is taking a proactive step to address its construction workforce needs with the launch of the Skilled to Build initiative.
This program is designed to prepare local residents and small businesses for the surge in infrastructure projects anticipated from the recently approved one-cent sales tax referendum.
The tax is projected to generate $19.4 billion over the next 30 years, funding significant enhancements to public transportation and roadway infrastructure across Mecklenburg County.
Skilled to Build focuses on three main areas:
Small Business Readiness: Implementing training programs and providing resources to help Charlotte's small businesses compete for upcoming transportation and mobility project contracts.
Workforce Development: Offering grants to develop a skilled workforce for transportation projects and connecting employers to talent, training, apprenticeships, and upskilling opportunities.
Business Engagement: Providing small business certification, technical guidance, outreach, and access to resources so businesses can compete for city procurement opportunities.
City officials emphasize that this initiative is not just about infrastructure; it's about building opportunities.
By investing in both people and development, Charlotte aims to ensure that growth benefits the entire community.
In addition to Skilled to Build, other local organizations are contributing to workforce development.
For instance, the BuildStrong Academy of Charlotte offers complimentary carpentry and electrical training to address the skilled labor shortage in the residential construction industry.
Similarly, She Built This City, a nonprofit founded in 2019, empowers girls and women to learn construction and manufacturing trades through training and hands-on experience.
These programs, alongside Skilled to Build, are crucial as Charlotte continues to experience population growth and major infrastructure projects.
By equipping residents with the necessary skills and supporting small businesses, the city is fostering economic mobility and ensuring that development benefits the entire community.
