Charlotte's New Main Library Opening Delayed to Spring 2027 |
Construction progresses on Uptown's five-story library, now set to open a year later than planned. |
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's new Main Library in Uptown Charlotte is now scheduled to open in spring 2027, a year later than initially planned.
Construction began in 2024 on the five-story, 115,000-square-foot facility located at the corner of 6th and North Tryon Streets.
The delay is attributed to meticulous work aimed at ensuring the building's longevity.
Library Director Caitlin Moen emphasized the importance of this approach, stating, "This iconic building is something that's not been built before, and as we try to bring this vision to life but also ensure that 50-year lifespan, we are doing our due diligence in making sure that we are constructing this in a way that's sustainable and successful."
The new library will feature state-of-the-art technology, open-air spaces, an immersive theater, and a 2,500-square-foot café with street views and public seating.
Additionally, a pedestrian-friendly Tryon Plaza will include an ADA ramp and automated book return.
Funding for the $137 million project comes from both public and private sources.
Mecklenburg County has contributed $72.33 million, while the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation is working to raise the remaining $65 million through private donations.
As of now, the foundation is approximately $8 million short of its goal.
Once completed, the library is expected to attract about one million visitors in its first year, serving as a major destination in Uptown Charlotte.
The design incorporates community feedback, focusing on adult users, while the nearby ImaginOn branch continues to serve children and teens.
Despite the delay, the library aims to enhance Uptown's evolving cultural landscape and provide a sustainable, innovative space for the community. |
