Stage 2 Water Restrictions Hit Charlotte: What Homeowners Need to Know Before May 15

Charlotte is entering Stage 2 water restrictions starting May 15, 2026. Here’s exactly what it means for your lawn, pool, and daily routine—and how to avoid fines.

It’s been a beautiful, sunny spring in the Queen City—but that sunshine comes with a dry catch.

If your lawn is looking a little crispy or the creeks seem lower than usual, you’re not imagining it.

Starting May 15, 2026, Charlotte is officially moving into Stage 2 Water Restrictions.

These are not suggestions—they are mandatory rules designed to help prevent a more serious water shortage.

Here’s exactly what you need to know.

Why This Is Happening Now

Charlotte has triggered what’s known as a low inflow protocol—meaning less water is flowing into reservoirs than what’s being used.

With ongoing drought conditions and continued population growth, the city is acting early to avoid a full-scale water crisis.

Mandatory Lawn Watering Schedule

Lawn watering is now limited to two days per week, and only during cooler hours:

6:00 PM – 6:00 AM

Here’s how it breaks down:

Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday & Saturday
Even-numbered addresses: Wednesday & Sunday

No watering is allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays.

Pool Rules You Need to Know

You can still maintain your pool—but with restrictions:

Top-offs only (no full fills)
• Allowed on Thursday & Sunday
• Only between 6 PM – 6 AM

Car Washing & Fountains

No residential car washing using a hose
Commercial car washes are allowed
Decorative fountains must be turned off unless recirculating

Fines & Enforcement

The city will be actively monitoring usage.

Violations start at $100 per offense and can increase quickly.

If you have an irrigation system, now is the time to update your schedule.

How to Keep Your Garden Alive

Good news—there’s still flexibility for gardens:

• Hand watering is generally allowed
• Use watering cans or hoses with shut-off nozzles
• Water early morning or evening for best results

Pro tip: Mulch helps retain moisture and reduces how often you need to water.

What Happens Next?

Stage 2 is a preventative step—but if conditions worsen, Stage 3 could limit watering to just one day per week.

For now, compliance helps avoid stricter restrictions later.

Quick Summary

Start Date: May 15, 2026
Lawn Watering: 2 days/week (6 PM – 6 AM)
Odd Addresses: Tue & Sat
Even Addresses: Wed & Sun
Pools: Top-off only (Thu & Sun)
Car Washing: Commercial only
Fountains: Off
Fines: $100+

Stay cool, Charlotte—and let’s all do our part to conserve water.
