Charlotte Mobilizes Support Amid SNAP Benefits Suspension

Community and County Leaders Unite to Address Food Insecurity

In response to the recent suspension of federal SNAP benefits, Charlotte's community and county leaders are taking decisive action to support the approximately 138,000 residents affected.

Mecklenburg County has allocated $740,000 to bolster local food resources. This funding aims to enhance food pantry supplies, distribute additional food boxes, and provide financial assistance through gift cards and vouchers.

Community Initiatives

Local organizations are stepping up to fill the gap left by the federal funding freeze. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Food Policy Council, in partnership with Mecklenburg County Public Health, has introduced a temporary program offering SNAP recipients $50 in tokens to use at participating farmers markets. This initiative allows families to access fresh produce and other eligible items during the month of November.

Participating farmers markets include:

Charlotte Regional Farmers Market

1801 Yorkmont Road, Charlotte, NC

Saturdays, 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Davidson Farmers Market

120 S Main Street, Davidson, NC

Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Matthews Community Farmers Market

Additional Support

Organizations like Hearts United for Good (HUG Charlotte) are also intensifying efforts to meet the growing demand. HUG Charlotte provides free food and essentials every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at their facility located at 2920 North Tryon Street.

For those seeking assistance, Mecklenburg County Community Resource Centers are available:

As the federal government shutdown continues, local officials and community partners remain committed to ensuring that families in Charlotte have access to necessary food resources during this challenging time.
